| Deviations is a multi-media installation that explores the blurred lines between reality and fictional, memory and loss. Taking as a point of departure an intervention realized in June 2007 where the artist cycled over 1600 km between Venice, Basel, Kassel and Muenster attended the opening days of each of four international artistic events the project seeks to create a nonlinear, fragmentary travelogue. En route, Rondeau documented (using still photography, video and blog) her experiences. These documents were uploaded daily to World Wide WARC web site. A virtual space hosted by Women’s Art Resource Centre in Toronto. Drawing on both original video, photo and ephemera collected during the Art Ride intervention along with found footage from popular culture Deviations is a psychological mapping of the artist’s emotional and economic ups and downs while in transit between four cultural events of global profile. A blend of personal stories is interlaced with spurious accounts, creating a layered narrative of alteration and exaggeration that is a vacillation of the diaristic, documentary and fantasy.
As a complement to the gallery installation, Cheryl Rondeau has created an internet component that includes reflections on travel from both the artist and visitors to the gallery, accessible on-line from anywhere.
